I am so excited to share this recipe with you today! This refreshing gin elderflower cocktail with fresh grapefruit juice and prosecco simple syrup is a delicious take on one of my favorite drinks, the French 75 cocktail. It’s the perfect summer cocktail. And it also makes a festive holiday drink.
Gin Elderflower Cocktail with Graprefruit Juice and Prosecco Syrup
Even if you’re not a gin drinker, I am pretty sure you’ll love this cocktail! It has a super refreshing, tangy citrus flavor. It’s not overly sweet — or too boozy. And it’s also so pretty, right?
It’s modeled after the classic French 75 cocktail, which is traditionally made with gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and a splash of sparkling wine.
For this version, the lemon juice is replaced with grapefruit juice, and the sparkling wine is added to the simple syrup. And the sweet and fruity taste of the St. Germain elderflower liquor pairs perfectly with the grapefruit and helps brighten the cocktail.
And it’s so good!
Grapefruit Gin Cocktail Ingredients
This elderflower gin cocktail is super easy to make. Here is what you’ll need:
- GIN: For this cocktail, I used a Scottish gin called Rock Rose. I first became a big fan of Rock Rose gin while drinking (lots of) gin and tonics during our trip to Scotland last year. There, the cocktails are garnished with a wedge of red grapefruit, which pairs perfectly with gin’s floral and fruity flavors. But you can use any gin you prefer. I would suggest using one that’s not too juniper-flavor forward, though. Hendrick’s would work well. And if you’re in California, you could also try the Sunday Gin from the San Diego-based You & Yours Distillery.
- ELDERFLOWER LIQUOR: Elderflower liquor is a slightly sweet, floral liquor made from the small, white flowers of the elderflower bush. Some people think it tastes like lychee. For this recipe, I used St. Germain.
- PROSECCO SIMPLE SYRUP: For the Prosecco syrup, all you need to do is take equal parts Prosecco (any Prosecco or sparkling wine will work) and sugar and simmer in a saucepan until all the sugar is dissolved and thickened. I used 1 cup prosecco and 1 cup of sugar. The syrup can be made in advance and then refrigerated in a glass jar for up to 1 month.
- THE GARNISH: You can add a simple strip of grapefruit peel. Or try afew edible flowers, like I did here (I used chamomille and mini dianthus). If you do add flowers to your drink, make sure they are edible flowers. Organic ones are best, as well. And make sure to wash them before adding them to your drink.

Notes
- I would use a good quality gin that is more citrus or floral forward and less juniper-forward. I used a Scottish gin called Rock Rose. Hendrick’s would also be a good option.
- To make the Prosecco syrup, take equal parts Prosecco and sugar (I used 1 cup Prosecco and 1 cup sugar) and add to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and let it simmer until all the sugar is dissolved and the liquid has started to thicken, about 3-5 minutes. The syrup can be refrigerated in a glass jar for up to 1 month. If you need to store it longer, it can also be frozen.
